Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword Spoiler Free Review

The Wii started with a Zelda game, and now its last hoorah is also a Zelda game. Go out with a bang, Nintendo.

There has been a lot of hype surrounding this game since its first teased at E3 three years ago. It has gotten a lot of people's hopes up and expectations in the clouds. With the integration with the Wii Motion Plus and the celebration of 25 years of Zelda, it is the highest anticipated game for the Nintendo universe. With all of that riding on it, especially with the Wii's current standing in the gaming world, it's safe to say Nintendo and Miyamoto put a lot of effort into this game. I can safely say though, that they hit the mark.

Let’s start with what we know, the game is integrated with the Wii Motion Plus technology, and it really shows. All enemies can guard themselves and you must pick which of the nine strikes will harm it. Yes, the sword has one to one movement, but as for your sword, you have only 9 attack patterns: up and down, left and right, upward/downward right slash, upward/downward left slash, and stab. The game utilizes this by having every enemy guard themselves in a specific way, so you must choose a swing pattern that will hurt it, or else its blocked, or worse you can be damaged. Which sounds great and awesome on paper, however actually playing it, it can get very frustrating. It could be just me however, so I'm not really criticizing it. I had to teach myself to slow down when attacking and to take my time and not rush, which gets hard when you're facing a boss and you're getting caught in the adrenaline rush from successfully hurting it. Though sometimes it DID read my swinging motion incorrectly. I swung the Wii Mote left to right but it thought it was an upward right slash, however I can defend it once more because of the way i was positioned according to the screen and the sensor, or perhaps i really was but it didn't have a dramatic incline. So, I’m not entirely sure if this is a Wii problem or a me problem. Lastly was the problem with me and stabbing. I couldn't get it to work nine times out of 10. Again, it could be just me.

However, since the Nunchuck isn't as developed as the Wii Motion Plus so it still has its bugs. Case and point: in order to raise your shield [if you have one] you must thrust the Nunchuck forward and the shield will be activated. Makes sense right? Well, sometimes when I was swinging the Wii Mote with some energy, as I said I got caught in the adrenaline, the shield would then come out instead. Another example is when you get your bow and arrow, you can hold down the ‘c’ button and “pull” back the Nunchuck to arm it, however you can also move the Nunchuck forward and the same result will happen.

Let’s move on to the subject of the actual game. There’s not many differences in this game but there are a couple noticeable changes. They added a couple rpg elements to the game, where you have to collect things in order to upgrade some items. Though these are not necessary for you to beat the game, but the ways you collect these items are generally not fun. I had to collect a certain item to upgrade my shield, however I had to buy an item and use that item to catch an animal in order to get the item, and there’s no other way of obtaining this item, and even after beating the game I still don’t’ have one particular item, I don’t’ know what it is, because I never found it.

An additional change is the new inventory system, it’s a little bit different. You get your important items on one screen, where you can access one at any time, but then items like the shield and your bottles are in your “adventure pouch.” It holds 4 total items at the start and you can find and buy additional pouches. So I had a sidequest where I had to save a girl and in order to do that I was given an item, however my adventure pouch was full, and I had NO idea how to get rid of items. I’m not sure if this was explained in the game, but you have to go to the bazaar and there’s one shop where you can exchange items. I had to find a video of a guy on youtube who was literally raging over this to find out how to free up space. Lastly about this topic, upgrades to your bomb bag, quiver, and seed bag are bought and take up space in your pouch instead of the actual item. I don’t personally don’t understand these additional changes into the game, I guess the argument is to add realism, but you’re talking about realism in a game that there’s clouds you literally can’t go through clouds and that you ride giant birds. I don’t buy that.

So, you’ve seen all these negatives, but don’t let that get you down, there are TONS of positives. I loved this game from beginning to end. The story was wonderful and deep. The characters were well displayed like from Wind Waker and deep and developed like from Majora’s Mask. The world was very imaginatively created with four different areas, each with its own theme and creatures. However, these areas are NOT connected to each other in any way, minus the sky. However, the areas…are actually small in comparison in size of Hyrule Field in Twilight Princess. The three areas under the ground are about medium size, and they have pretty good amount of stuff to do, but yet the sky area is expansive, but there’s not much to do up there! It’s like the ocean in Wind Waker but more emptiness. I think they gave up the world space for the story telling. This is just a theory because we all know the Wii’s limitations.

A fantastic feature is its music! Everything was orchestrated and beautifully composed. It’s not typical of Zelda music but it works SO well with Skyward Sword’s world, and I can’t think of any pieces of music that could have made it any better. I can’t wait to get my hands on the soundtrack, if they decide to release one.

Again though, these are just small little factors in this large wonderful game.  As much as I would LOVE to go into the story, I won’t. The story is deep and fascinating, it’s a great game and I didn’t want to put down the Wii mote. It’s an almost perfect game, and any problems are really just nitpicking. They don’t really take anything away from the game, just sometimes makes you question a couple things.  Overall I will give this game a 9.5/10. Yes it’s another silly number but the biggest issue was the world. It was large but yet nothing to do and it’s nowhere near the size it could have been, but yet the rich story could have been its consequence.  If you haven’t already, pick up this rare awesome title for the Wii.

EMU RANT

this is a rant.

small background: I'm on academic probation. I did LOUSY last semester (although not as bad as i originally thought, i'll get to that later). I did so bad i decided to take it easy this semester, to get my head back on straight. I was burnt out and well...it sure showed during the semester.

so a couple weeks ago i got this e-mail on my emich account, confirming that i am on probation and saying i should make an appoint with the student academic advising team. after a couple weeks of neglecting it, i decided to call and make an appointment because i had no idea what "academic probation" means. it wasn't in the e-mail and it wasn't on their website either (that i could find). so i called and made an appointment for like 9 am.

9 am hit and i was there. and i had to fill out this form about who i was and what my gpa is (i put <2.0) and my "probation level." i had no idea what that meant so i just put a '?'  and then on the back of the pamphlet they had a little questioniare about some factors why i did poorly last semester. and it said to put comments where needed, but the area to put ANY comment was "_______" NO joke. took me about 5 minutes to get trough it, even though i left like 4 blank

after an additional 15 minutes and 2 phone calls to his office, he finally came out to get me. the very first thing he asked was if i used my e-mich email and i said "no"  and he had a mini fit. "your e-mich should be the only e-mail you use! Be professional about it! No professional would use yahoo or google or hotmail." and then the remainder of the first half hour was him giving me sheets of paper about some resources for school. and then he stopped and looked at me and asked "so what's your answer" what answer??? you never asked 1 god damn thing. ALL you've done is giving me papers on how to be a better student. cuz apparently i'm too retarded to know the resources around me. and then he asked me if i knew how to figure out my gpa. i groaned and said yes. but he explained how to anyway. he first saying that you go into probation if your gpa is below 2.0 and then the school has a policy where basically you have 3 semester to get your gpa back up to at least a 2.0 and then financial aid as well. and then the school offers to retake classes to change your grade for the class.  so he showed me that my gps is....1.93. I"m happy because i thought my gpa would've been like <1.3 or something. cuz i know i did bad last semester, but not as bad as i thought. and then he looked at me like i was crazy being happy for my current gpa, and all he really said was "it doesn't round up" continuing that i'm just some retard

He then started looking over my classes i have taken at emich and noticed that i had received honors credit for math and that i took calc 1 and calc 2 here. and looked at me and asked "why are you taking these math classes?" i told him because i wanted to get to the highest math class there, and decided to start at calc 1 again because it's been a long while since i took calc 2. and then he looked at me. in disbelief. NOT because i'm taking calc for fun but... "maybe you should start at [insert's minimum math requirement class name here]" I WAS SO PISSED.  I DON'T THINK HIGHLY OF MYSELF...EVER. AND YOU LITTLE FUCKER, I TAKE PRIDE IN MY MATHEMATICAL ABLILITY! IT IS ONE OF THE VERY FEW THINGS I'M PROUD OF MYSELF.  and this FUCKER had to destroy it. HOW DARE YOU E
VEN ASSUME ANYTHING ABOUT MYSELF WITHOUT ASKING 1 DAMN THING!!! YOU DON'T KNOW ANYTHING. HOW THE FUCK CAN YOU UNDERSTAND ANYTHING OR GET TO KNOW THE ROOT PROBLEM WITHOUT ASKING 1 FUCKING THING (more on this later)

so after a small silence he manage to ask me a simple question about last semester "were there any problems outside of school?" YES. BECAUSE IT'S NEVER THE SCHOOL'S FAULT. i manage to hint that there were problems school wise "no, not really, but the math class was just bad scheduling" "what do you mean?" "Well, they were 45 minute classes." "Ok?" "Well, the first thing is that we spent the first 30 minutes answering problem (2 if we're LUCKY) from last night's homework and then, the last 10-15 minutes TRYING to cram the new material." "Oh, I don't see anything wrong with that" WHAT??? WHAT THE FLYING FUCK ARE YOU ON???? YOU CAN'T HAVE A MATH CLASS BUILT LIKE THIS. WHEN YOU ONLY GET 10 MINUTES OF GETTING NEW INFORMATION. WHERE PPL HAVE TONS OF QUESTIONS, OF WHICH THE TEACHER CAN'T REALLY ANSWER, BECAUSE HE DOESN'T HAVE ENOUGH TIME. HOW THE FUCK IS NOT A PROBLEM????

I had enough of him at this point. I wanted to just get up and leave. it seemed pointless because how this was being treated. so after another silence he asked me what my degree was in. "S.A.G" (simulation, animation, Gaming) of which he replied "same here." (i don't believe him) so he went on telling about how i should contact the head ppl of the college of technology and their advisors. so by now it's like 9:50 and i'm DYING to leave. so he asked what specifically i wanted to do. i told him i want to go into gaming. I believe he gave a look of "you can't do that"  his only response was "you want to be a part of the process or pr?" "i want to be part of the process." "Artist?" "No, i can't draw to save my life" "So a programmer?" 'yes" "you know there's more to game industry than that" --I guess he just assumed that I'M TOO RETARDED TO MAKE A GAME.FUCKER, I HAVE MADE MORE THAN 2 GAMES (though the 2 are the best i've made) AND YOU KNOW WHAT? THEY WERE BEST OF CLASS IN A STUDENT SHOW AND ONE OF THEM WAS ON THE FRONT PAGE OF NEWGROUNDS. i hate this guy. to the core. I hate him. I want him dead. -- he then just kind explained other ways to be a part of the gaming industry that's not in the process of making games.  I swear to god he was gonna say something along the lines of "maybe you should reconsider. it's a hard process of making game" but he didn't. but he did. i would've torn him a new one.

So then, he turned me to saying "I didn't get much of a feedback from you." WELL GEE. IT'S NOT LIKE YOU ASKED ME ANYTHING!! YOU NEVER ASKED ME WHAT HAPPENED LAST SEMESTER. OR EVEN THINK THAT THERE MIGHT SOME PROBLEMS BY THE SCHOOL. NO OF COURSE NOT. EASTERN IS A FUCKING PARADISE AND NOTHING CAN EVER GO FUCKING WRONG. MAYBE IF YOU ACTUALLY ASKED ME A LEGITIMATE QUESTION ABOUT LAST SEMESTER, YOU MIGHT'VE GOTTEN A "FEEDBACK" BUT NO. YOU JUST FUCKING ASSUMED THAT I'M SOME RETARD WHO DOESN'T KNOW JACK FUCKING SHIT. seriously, the way he talked to me throughout the thing was i was such a lower lower than him, than i ever COULD be. So...i have to see him again on the 22nd. for god only knows what. maybe he'll actually do something smart. and ask me what was the problem. Idk. i just might not even go. I just wanted to go to see what "academic probation" means and what this means for me. but he only talked about it for 5 minutes.

i think that's it....i can't and i dont' want to remember right now. i'm burnt out being uber upset. so...sigh.
if there's more i'll just add to this one and hopefully the next meeting won't be THIS bad. meh

long time no post

public post 10012011{
public void catchUp{
It's sure been a very long time since i actually posted anything relevant on anything. lol. but i do have quite a few things to update. First off, the end of 2010 was absolutely horrid. just wanted to say that. I get that people think i'm not social or something, but i do want to be. i'd love to be invited to things and junk. I like being with people, but i guess people don't like being with me. oh well. but since about January 2nd, i've been feeling absolutely awesome. I've feel a lot better about everything and about my life. Granted I still don't have much "self-worth" and stuff related to that. I don't know why though, it just sort of just happened out of nowhere. Though i did get new clothes for myself on the 2nd (new pants, underwear, belt) and also i've been wearing a different hoodie than the one i was wearing. And i'm getting really better at my self image junk as well. lol. Though i do have to work on my social-ness. granted, since ppl don't invite me to junk, I have to FORCE myself out there. blugh. lol. I don't do that. I've never done that. Seriously. It's a miracle that i gained the friends i have. People try to suggest some tactics, but they worked horribly in the past. Now, granted, idk if they'll work NOW, in the present, but I'm still very hesitant to try these tactics once again. All i know, i've been failing to try to talk to new ppl. But i do know i have a harder time with girls..probably because i know i'll just be rejected--cuz i was rejected 98% of the time anyway. so why bother. YOU KNOW. i want to ask the girls that (probably won't read this) have rejected me and give the REAL answer you rejected me. Maybe that'll help as will help. Maybe that'll also change if i get a job? who knows. All i know i'm gonna try to send out more than 40 applications THIS week! starting wednesday probably. Anyway. I'm thinking of doing a very stupid action on fb soon. lol

OH Adam. Baby

"A simple report, dull even...." Oh I wish I could say the same for this review, Samus. Metroid: Other M was said to be a re-imagine of the Metroid series, with Team Ninja in the works, it was said it'd take "risks." Though there's one thing with risks, they turn out good...or end up being a mistake.

(Spoilers are ahead)

Let's get right to it. In Metroid: Other M, you play as Samus, a bounty hunter who has saved galaxy numerous times and, in case you've forgotten, is a girl. Normally gender doesn't really play much into the story, but not in this game, but I’ll get to that later. The game takes place sometime after Super Metroid for the SNES and you battle your way through the BOTTLE SHIP, a research ship that, you discover over time, is doing bio-weapon research and testing.

The game plays out as an "enhanced" 2.5D game, as you can freely move around in the corridors. The camera is fixed, because it IS a 3rd person shooter, but don't fret, the camera is actually placed in well positions. I never had a problem with the camera. It also has first person elements, like scanning things and shooting missiles, but more on that later.

As mentioned before, the game starts off after the events of Super Metroid and you start off going through a quarantine process. Of course, since this is Team Ninja we're talking about, we have Samus in her Zero Suit and we're just staring at her boobs (which I first noticed they're rather large...). Then you hear a monologue from Samus about what's going on at the moment, like why she's there and how she feels about it. This, I believe, to be a both good and bad thing. Hearing Samus "discussing" the actions gives her more of human side to her; she is no longer just a killing machine. But yet she drones on and on and on about either the baby metroid from Super Metroid or about her former commanding officer from when she was in the Galactic Federation, Adam (who has an emotional range of a teaspoon).

Unfortunately, most of her monologues are about Adam and how she feels about him. They're mostly all over 5 minutes of her just focusing on Adam. Most of her flashbacks are about when she was in the Galactic Federation Army and shows a few scenes from few different missions, all under the command of Adam. She focused on how she wished she could be closer to Adam, wished to know how he felt and ways to have more connections with him. Though, when she was reading, it was also god awful. It was like Samus turned back to 13 and was reading off her livejournal entries to the public. (And yes, she ACTUALLY says "Confession time") However, when she was talking in the present, or commenting on the actual clues of the situation, she sounded older and mature. However, that all changed when Adam sacrificed himself and she turned into a 12 year old, bawling her eyes out to save Adam (I however was jumping in joy). Team Ninja DID say that the game was more focused on Samus' past and will give Samus some character, but I do believe they did it in the wrong way. If you wanted to show Samus becoming strong and gaining character, do it by showing her inner battles while saving planets before, or showing her victories while in the Galactic Federation, not her focusing emotionally on Adam. It seems insulting or even hypocritical to show the most bad ass and non-sexualized girl in gaming to be almost weak. I mean, she freaks the fuck out over facing Ridley and turns into a crying little girl, I'm NOT joking. By this time in the Metroid series, you've faced Ridley 5 times, and now, all of the sudden she gets paralyzed with fear just by seeing Ridley.

Back to the first person aspect, in order to go into it, you have to point your Wiimote towards the screen; there are a few problems with mode however. When you first point it, there's a tiny moment where you go "wait, where's my reticule?" On top of that, you cannot move while in this, so you're always a standing target when you go into this mode. When you have to go into this mode to fire missiles there's usually tons of enemies circling around you, so you have to wait for the right moment so you don't get hit from the side. It's a huge juggling act during boss battles. You WILL get hit; it's just how many times you get hit will measure how well you are. There's also a few minor issues with its aim. You look around the area with the B button held down and moving around the Wiimote around the screen, and if there's an enemy around, you lock onto the baddie with the B button as well. However, if there's more than that on the screen, it seems the lock wants to go to the enemy that's furthest away, which could and is a pain at the final "battle."

However, when you're not standing around, you'll be in third person mode. You move around freely with the D-pad and jump around with the 1 button and shoot like a crazy fool with the 2 button. As simple as the control scheme is, it REALLY works. You're forced to have auto-aim, which is a lot better than it sounds. After playing awhile, you can't really imagine playing this game any other way, even a true first person shooter.  It really works; you see how Samus really battles baddies, and the athletic dodge is always very nice to have. Although the auto aim only starts when the enemies are less than 4 feet away from you, but that's pretty good, it knows which enemies to prioritize over (like the ones you can kill vs. the ones you can't). Another thing that works so well is the item gathering. It first sounded easy like, you can't miss it now, since its 3rd person, but yet they still hid the power ups so well. It actually made me want to play the game more, even after seeing the credits.

There are points however in the game that seems to not make any sense whatsoever. Beyond the cinematics that solely focuses on Adam and/or things that really move the story along, but there are points where you are forced to walk. The camera zooms up to Samus' robotic ass and you walk around. The camera is fixed on that angle and it's hard to move into a position you want to get in. I'm assuming you can only walk because it adds suspense, but i get tired walking like that in a rather large area and it takes 5 minutes to walk from point A to B. There are also bathrooms or something that has no purpose in the game. Also there are a few inferences in this game. In the forced tutorial portion the guy who's walking you through the moves says stuff like "Those are the moves I remember." And then "I even polished up your suit, so you look somewhat presentable," as he pushes up his glass like a giant pervert, focusing on her breasts and nothing else. There are also some hints that Samus' and Adam were doing more than what was said (which sickens me). There were also moments of sexism throughout the entire game. The biggest example is when you can't use your powers, not because you don't have the powers, but ADAM hasn't given you permission. Also, at the end, a head general dude calls Samus an outsider and doesn't belong around what the men are doing. Another thing is the ending. It's super anticlimactic. After 3 super long cinematics, you find sector zero, where all the cold resistant metroids and Mother Brain are located. You're all prepared for this final assault. But Adam appears and takes it out and self-destructs the entire section. And then when you face the real Mother Brain you just scan her and the game ends. The last portion of the game can be summarized as "Anticlimactic" Also, after you get the ice beam, which are your wave and plasma beams, can FREEZE enemies. One last thing, if you're low on health and/or missiles, you don't have to kill enemies to get pickups, you hold up the Wiimote and hold the A button you "concentrate," you replenish your ammo.

(End Spoilers)

All in all the game goes into Samus' past and focuses on it the wrong way. The controls are simple and seem natural. The story is in depth and worth getting into, including the side story, even if the ending doesn't seem to constitute itself. So, if you're a veteran Metroid fan, this game will probably NOT live up to the hype. However if you’re new to the series this will be a great incentive to play the other Metroid games to see how much of a badass she truly is!

The final word:  it deserves a 3.5...out of 5. Which is strange to give, especially with this being my first review and all, but it deserves more than a 3 but defiantly less than a 4. It’s a good rental, but I wouldn’t buy it unless I’m really new to the series and need something to dust off my Wii.
